William Shakespeare says, "When I was at home, I was in a better place." I believe this is the same for most people. Home is what we recall as the safest place, but what if for someone it’s a completely horrifying place? The contrast raises important questions about women's safety at home.
According to a United Nations study issued on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, "almost 60 percent of all women who were intentionally killed in 2023" perished at the hands of their spouses or relatives. "The home is the most dangerous place for women and girls," the report continued.
Key Findings from the Report
Overview of Findings
- Daily Death Toll: On average, 140 women and girls were murdered each day in 2023 by intimate partners or family members, amounting to approximately 51,100 victims globally. This represents an increase from 48,800 victims in 2022
- Global Statistics: The report indicates that about 60% of the estimated 85,000 women and girls killed intentionally in 2023 were murdered by someone they were close to, highlighting a pervasive issue of domestic violence
Regional Insights
- Africa: This region reported the highest number of intimate partner and family-related homicides, with an estimated 21,700 victims. Africa also has the highest victimization rate relative to its population, at 2.9 per 100,000 people
- Americas and Oceania: The Americas recorded a rate of 1.6 female victims per 100,000, while Oceania had a rate of 1.5 per 100,000
- Asia and Europe: In contrast, Asia reported a significantly lower rate of 0.8 per 100,000, and Europe had the lowest at 0.6 per 100,000
Nature of Violence
- The report emphasizes that most killings of women in Europe and the Americas occur within the home and are predominantly committed by intimate partners. Conversely, most male homicides happen outside domestic settings
- Despite men accounting for about 80% of all homicide victims, women experience a disproportionate impact from lethal violence within domestic spaces. Nearly 60% of all women killed in 2023 were victims of intimate partner or family member violence, underscoring a significant gender disparity in homicide rates.
